“Amor Fati,” a Latin phrase for “love of fate” or “love of one’s fate,” magnifies and dissects the theme of isolation as visual artist, Jerline Sunga, embraces monotony and restriction as part of her process in seeing these as potential sources of ideas for her artworks. The artist reminisces on past experiences back when she was still a child, wherein restrictions of playing outside and confinement at home with her toys made initial impressions of restraint. To cope with the situation, Jerline created imaginary scenes and recreated her own world. These experiences led the artist to acknowledge fate as a child.
The artist immerses in the phrase and unhinges an attitude of seeing everything that happens in one’s life, including suffering and loss, as essential experiences in achieving a holistic introspection on growth, understanding one’s individuality, and loving one’s fate.
