In Inherited Lands, Jay Torres reflects on how landscapes, both physical and political, take shape through the decisions of the powerful and become part of the world ordinary people experience. The exhibition considers how distant events, particularly war, influence perceptions of place, belonging, and the possibility of peace.
Though unfamiliar in a geographical sense, the territories depicted possess a curious sense of recognition. These seem to exist somewhere between memory and imagination, evoking places never personally encountered yet somehow deeply felt. Through this imagined geography, Torres explores the subtle connections between distant realities and the human instinct to seek meaning in the world.
Rendered in gentle greens and tranquil scenery, the paintings offer openness and quiet refuge. The serene appearance suggests an alternative to the turbulence of contemporary life, revealing a longing for spaces where simplicity and stillness can prevail. Becoming more than imagined destinations, these idyllic settings embody the possibility of finding comfort amid uncertainty.
Inherited Lands presents the landscape as both a reflection of the world as it exists and a glimpse of what it might become. Through these contemplative scenes, Torres offers a vision shaped by hope rather than unrest, where the search for sanctuary gives way to the possibility of renewal, and the idea of home extends beyond familiar ground into places nurtured by imagination and the enduring desire for peace.
