Art Underground Manila

In textured matter, Miguel Franco explores the quiet complexity of forms through the interplay of charcoal and paper, translating ordinary materials into compositions rich with emotion, memory, and symbolism. Rendered entirely in black and white, his works inhabit a monochromatic world where texture becomes language, geometry finds its own expression, and delicate structures carry meanings beyond their physical presence.

Through the recurring imagery of origami cranes and the expressive weight of charcoal, Franco examines the relationship between fragility and permanence, restraint and release, stillness and transformation. Sharp, rigid forms appear to disentangle themselves from what lies beneath, while carefully constructed paper structures evoke the tender architecture of memories, things gathered, preserved, and sometimes built upon to find footing.

Each composition unfolds as an introspective passage, emanating a shifting emotional landscape, a luminous moment within darkness, a threshold waiting to be crossed, or simply an invitation to pause. The artist’s monochrome palette deepens expression, allowing subtle contrasts, layered textures, and deliberate arrangements to reveal the nuances of human experience.

Ultimately, textured matter presents found and created matter as an abstract language of becoming. Through the artist’s thoughtful manipulation of form and material, the familiar becomes contemplative, exploring how humanity is shaped by what it remembers, what it leaves behind, and what it chooses to carry forward.
